Waiting around and spending any severance you were lucky to get is lazy and you are asking for trouble. Don’t assume your friends think you are as good as you think you are. Take it upon yourself to tell your friends your major milestones, the projects you completed under budget, the kudos you got, etc. If you are like me, you know your friends really well, but do you know, REALLY know, how good they are at their job? I know one of my friends is a CPA, do I don’t know he is a great CPA. Have professional meetings with friends and make sure they know what you do and how well you do it, and ask them who they know that might be willing to help you. Turn to the people that you know to help you market your skills. Trust me, the job boards are flooded with people that say they have the same skill sets you have, with the same or more years of experience, probably for less money.
